Map of Singapore

Geography

Singapore is situated in the South China Sea to the south of Malaysia and consists of the main, low-lying Singapore Island, measuring 42km (26mi) east to west and 23km (14mi) north to south, and 58 smaller islands within its territorial waters. The centre of Singapore island contains a number of rounded granitic hills that include the highest point, Bukit Timah Peak, which is 162.5 metres above sea level. The island is drained by a large number of short streams, some of which flow into the sea through mangrove swamps, lagoons, or broad estuaries.

Climate
Singapore is hot and humid all year round with the temperature ranging between 20°C (68°F) and 30°C (86°F) and the humidity staying around the 75% mark. Singapore is wettest from November to January and at its driest from May to July - the difference between the two, however, is slight.

Wildlife
There are no dangerous wild animals in Singpore. The wild life includes squirrels, monkeys, long-tailed macaques, flying lemurs and the seldom seen pangolin and mouse deer.

Cuisine
Nonya cooking is a local variation on Chinese and Malay food, mixing Chinese ingredients with local spices such as lemongrass and coconut cream. The popular spicy, coconut-based soup laksa is a classic Nonya dish. Indian and Western food are just as popular.
